I am over 40 too but I can’t say I am doing large amounts of cardio to get no results from.
Testosterone levels are something I’ve never even considered when planning my work outs.

This is very interesting. I’d never heard of endurance training being a bad thing for testosterone before. I’m currently training for a marathon and so I’m going to do that in a few months but after that I’ll decide if I want to continue with endurance running or not. How much would you say is ‘too much’??
I have to admit that I was shocked to learn about the effects endurance running had on testosterone. However after reading the article that I linked to in the beginning of this article. It is quite clear that the evidence is there.
As far as how much is to much. Medically I am not the one to answer that question. But I think a number of things come into play.
First some where in our early to mid 30’s our testosterone levels begin to decrease. This process continues at a faster rate through our 40’s and levels of somewhat at around 50. So your age plays a role.
Secondly would be your diet. Are you eating the right foods that can help promote natural free testosterone? There are foods and supplements that do in fact help keep testosterone levels elevated.
Now it also seems your workout has a lot to do with it. It has long been shown that High Intensity Intermediate Exercise (HIIE) has had great results when it comes to weight lifting and weight loss. The recent studies have only strengthened that argument.
At the end of the day, each person is different. Based on the factors listed above, you would need to judge what is best for you on an individual level. I personally skip all of the endurance training and stick to HIIE training. However I do not run marathons, nor do I plan to. So our situations are different.
Bryce, if long distance running is something you love, go with it. As far as results and effectiveness, the HIIE workout might be a better option. In my judgement, you should be able to have both, just make the HIIE training your dominate choice and treat the long distance runs as an occasional treat.
Maybe you could have one day a week when you go for an endurance run. Maybe the answer for you is twice a week. You can buy testosterone test strips at most health stores. Monitor tour T levels and play around with your work out routines and determine what works best for you.
